Physical Damage and You: A Beginners Guide

Understanding Physical Damage Weapons and Modifications they Receive

One of the basic tenants of this game is damage. This can be broken down into two main types of damage – physical and magic. (Obviously artifacts have their own special damage, we won’t be getting into that… yet).
We’re going to be focusing on PHYSICAL damage here first. A lot of what is written here will also apply to Magical damage, but we won’t cover that specifically yet.

Physical weapons and their corresponding speed:

  • Daggers: Fast (1 swing every .5 seconds)
  • Sword, Bow: Normal (1 swing/Shot every 1 second)
  • Mace, Crossbow: Slow (1 swing/Shot every 1.5 seconds)
  • Axe: Very slow (1 Swing every 2 seconds)
Here is where you can see that on a weapon – using a dagger as an example:

DAGGGGGGERRRRR OF DOOOOOOOM
Why does the speed of the weapon matter? This breaks down into damage per second. We’re going to do some basic math here, so be prepared for boring time.
Let’s assume we have 1 of each weapon all at 1000 Damage. What is their damage per second(DPS), based on their speed?
  • Dagger- 1000dmg/.5 second = 2000 DPS
  • Sword/bow – 1000dmg/1 second = 1000 DPS
  • Mace/Crossbow – 1000dmg/1.5 seconds = 667 DPS
  • Axe – 1000dmg/2 seconds = 500 DPS

So damage being equal, the faster the swing, the more damage you’ll do.

How does this work with damage bonuses on armor/rings/amulets?

It works the exact same way. Let’s say you get a piece of armor with 500-1500 damage (to keep the math easy) and we’ll assume you’re pairing it with the same 1000 damage weapons listed above.
Using that damage range – we’ll determine the average (I know boring and easy math but here it is) 500+1500=2000/2 = 1000 DPS addition on average from the armor.
Remembering that this damage addition uses the same swing speed modifiers as the weapon it’s using. So if using daggers, this is divided by .5, swords 1.. etc. Let’s do the math of how this will work. The DPS for your character would be as follows:
  • Daggers- 1000 damage average from armor / .5 seconds= 2000 DPS from Armor. Add that to the dagger DPS and you’re sitting at 4000 DPS with this setup.
  • Swords/Bow – 1000 Damage average / 1 = 1000 DPS from armor. Add that to the sword DPS and you’re sitting at 2000 DPS with this setup.
  • Mace/Crossbow – 1000 Damage average / 1.5 = 667 DPS from armor. Add that to the Mace/Crossbow DPS and you’re sitting at 1334 DPS with this setup.
  • Axe – 1000 Damage average / 2 = 500 DPS from armor. Add that to the Axe DPS and youre sitting at 1000 DPS with this setup.

Now just looking at the swing between Daggers + Armor to Mace + Armor.. there’s a 3000 DPS difference. This is how rings/amulets added damage works as well, so we won’t go through it all again here, but you’ll notice a pattern. The faster the weapon speed, the higher the damage per second.

So why would you ever use anything EXCEPT for daggers?

Good question. Other weapons – like Maces/Axes CAN have drastically higher Damage values than daggers, so maybe you get a 2500 damage Mace, and only have 1000 Damage daggers. In this case it may make more sense for you to use the Mace.
Other reasons? Bonuses. Some good tanking maces / axes can have chance to stun opponents on them, which can be very useful. Gems will also vary by weapon type. A lot of “tank” weapons will generally have slots for heart gems or dodge, while daggers will have things for crit and damage and dodge. (This isn’t the only way it works, but in generalities it is). What does this all mean for you? Nothing – use whatever weapon setup you like/have, but at least now you know what goes into it.
